In Memoriam: Glenn Haege
The DIY radio world lost a unique voice last week with the passing of Glenn Haege, who hosted The Handyman Show with Glenn Haege on Detroit radio for 34 years. Glenn’s nationally syndicated program helped Americans from coast to coast with their home improvement questions and DIY projects with a depth of knowledge and a folksy charm that is irreplaceable.
The wealth of knowledge Glenn shared on his program inspired a loyal following but what made them keep tuning in week after week was how he made even the most intimidating DIY task approachable to the most novice DIYer in his audience.
Glenn was an early champion of our products because he understood the value our products provided his audience. Mold outbreaks, with all their associated healthy risks, can be panic-inducing and when he recommended our products it’s because he understood not only that they work but how they work so he would comfortably share that info to callers on his show and put them at ease that what he was suggesting would work. He recommended our products every chance he could because he believed in them which is something we never lost sight of. We were always proud to be manufacturing products that someone like Glenn could unreservedly recommend. With us, he shared the simpatico of wanting to help people do something the best, most efficient way possible.
Glenn had a fierce integrity and held the strongest conviction that he owed his audience a debt of loyalty to help them solve their home improvement problems efficiently and correctly which always meant to maintaining his “objectivity” on behalf of his listeners. Glenn never accepted product endorsements and he would only ever back products on his show that he passionately believed in.
Glenn Haege was a singular voice in home improvement media and everyone in our organization is saddened by his passing. It’s difficult to imagine someone being able to fill Glenn’s seat at the mic and the silence that follows his loss will ring for some time to come. Our organization would like to pass on our deepest condolences to his family in this difficult time and to his production team, who feel his loss no less acutely and were a huge part of helping Glenn become the success he was.
