Essential Tools for the New Home Buyer by Mike Holmes
For brand new homeowners, once they’ve made the purchase, they start to dream. Dream about what to do with their new space, the fresh color of paint they’ll add, the furniture they’ll choose, and the renovations they plan for the future. I get it – it’s an exciting time in any person’s life.
But me, I geek out over tools. My kids grew up handy, and when they purchased their first houses, their tool kits were stocked and ready to go. But not everybody’s dad is Mike Holmes, so for you first timers out there looking to beef up their tool supply, here’s my list of where to start.
My favorite tool is the humble hammer. I think it’s something that absolutely every homeowner needs to have. Whether it’s hanging photos, or refastening a wobbly fence post, you never know when you’ll need to have your hammer handy.
Other basic tools you should have in your kit include a saw, measuring tape (measure twice, cut once), a level, adjustable wrench, a set of screwdrivers, pliers, and a drill.
Proper Safety Gear
You can’t do the job if you don’t have the proper safety gear. Just like every homeowner should have a hammer and measuring tape, you should also have goggles, masks, and gloves to prevent coming into contact with any harmful materials. Some jobs may even require disposable clothing.
And don’t forget your first-aid kit! Everything should be topped up, including bandaids, gauze, wipes, and tape.
Moisture & Mold Fighters
Many first time homeowners may be moving from a smaller apartment or condo, and may be dealing with owning a home with a basement, attic, crawlspace, or deck for the first time in their adult lives.
These spaces can become full of moisture, and that can lead to mold and mildew. Concrobium Moisture Grabbers can help reduce moisture in enclosed spaces that trap a lot of humidity. Perfect for your basement, attic, or crawlspace if you need some moisture management.
For general mold control – keep plenty of Concrobium Mold Control Spray on hand. With all the moisture, your bathroom can be especially vulnerable to mold growth. The spray crushes mold at the source, and helps prevent regrowth. To keep mold at bay in the first place, make sure you’re running a fan, or opening the window after you shower.
For outdoor use, Concrobium House & Deck Wash can bring your exterior surfaces that are looking dirty, grimy, or moldy back to life, without using bleach.
Every home should have a fire extinguisher. In fact, I’d recommend having a few. One near any entryways, one in the kitchen, and one in the garage all makes sense to me. Check the pressure gauge every so often to make sure it’s still in the green, and inspect the hose for breaks and cracks. In case of emergency, you want to know you can count on your extinguisher.
A fire extinguisher is a tool that’s meant to aid your escape in case of a fire. Should any fire break out – even if you douse it with your extinguisher, you still need to follow your fire safety plan, and call the fire department when you’ve evacuated safely.
